How To Pray - Basic Prayer Instruction

The most common prayer for Christians is found in the Bible.

Mathew 6:9-13(NIV Life Application Study Bible.1991.Tyndale. Pages 1657-1658)

This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowedbe your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

The above prayer Jesus said to pray 'like this'. Which means :

1. Praise God First
2. Pray for His will to be done in the world
3. Pray for what we need every day
4. Ask for forgiveness of our sins(this is repentence). And work to forgive those who you are in need of forgiving.
5. And lastly Pray for help in what we are having difficulty with, as well deliverance from evil.

It is the sincerity and honesty of your prayers that matter, instead of how long you pray or how much thought you put into it. God knows your heart. It is also not good to pray in a way that is just vain repetition. Just saying the same prayer over and over again thinking that God will be happy is not correct. He also wants us to pray to Him all the time, do not reserve prayer for just one hour of one day a week. Instead pray at any time of the day or night. When you pray and are sincere, God will then see that and hear you. And do not be afraid to persist in your prayers. God doesn't always say yes to us, but when he doesn't tell us no then we need to be persistent and/or patient. Lastly we often tend to pray for only those things and people that we care about, but we are to also pray for those people that are our enemies as well as those that have wronged us in any way.

About Forgiveness:

  • When it comes to admitting our sins to God we are working through the steps of repentance. It is important to note that though we are already saved when we accept Christ, we remember what grace we have recieved when we see that God forgives all. But we must work towards removing what causes us to sin as well. This doesn't mean cutting off your hand literally like you can read in the bible, it really means that if you are an alcoholic remove the alcohol and the desire for it, if you gamble remove yourself from places where you can gamble and the cause of your addiction.
  • And as He has forgiven us, we also ought to forgive everyone who has sinned against us as well! Though we forgive those people who have wronged us we don't have to trust them like nothing happened. Trust must be earned again, but forgiving them and releasing the bitterness and emotion so that this can not block God from working in your life is important!

Being Christian is being in a battle ground! The bible and prayer are weapons we use to fight against evil in our lives and to guide others as well. The bible acts like a light in the darkness helping us find our way out. The Holy Spirit can also guide you, do not forget to pray to the Spirit asking Him for guidance as well in hard times, or whenever you need it. As awesome as it is, we can pray to the Spirit, to the Son, and even to the Father. Either way, we are praying to God.
